The Blakeney Garden project is a two-acre farm field and a 3000-square-foot barn. The land has been farmed organically which was important for us — some Food Bank clients have disabilities and some are very sensitive to chemicals.

The Lanark County Food Bank has had a fair amount of experience raising fresh produce, having been involved in a dozen or so community garden projects over the last few years. However, this project took our gardening to a whole new level! Two acres is over 80,000 square feet – we hoped for 1/4 lb. of food from every square foot of garden or 20,000 lbs. By way of perspective, Lanark County Food Bank clients receive over 150,000 pounds of food on an annual basis.

We are entering year 3 of this amazing gift and each season has been incredibly prolific and enjoyed by our families with great enthusiasm.

As you can imagine, we are always looking for volunteers to help with this massive venture. If you have a “growing” interest and some time to donate on a regular basis please contact us at 613-257-8546 or (please indicate “garden” in the subject line or in a telephone message).

Garden shifts are:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Saturday: 9am – noon
  • Tuesday, Thursday: 5pm – 8pm
